Our collective identity is deeply intertwined with supporting our teams, our communities, our hardworking farmers, and of course, the exceptional products crafted right here. Nebraska’s Own Culinary Icon: The Story of Dorothy Lynch

The remarkable journey of Dorothy Lynch dressing began in the humble setting of the Legion Club in St. Paul, Nebraska, back in the 1940s. It was there that Dorothy herself crafted her homemade dressing, serving it to delighted patrons who quickly became enamored with its unique flavor. Such was its popularity that people would bring their own empty bottles to the club, eager to have them refilled with this now-famous concoction. This grassroots adoration laid the foundation for a legacy that continues to thrive today. From those modest beginnings, the production of Dorothy Lynch dressing has expanded to a state-of-the-art 64,000 square-foot facility in Duncan, Nebraska – a town with a close-knit population of just 351, embodying the small-town values from which the dressing originated.

Today, Dorothy Lynch dressing is available in two popular varieties: the classic Home Style and a lighter Fat-Free option, catering to diverse preferences without compromising on taste. A commitment to quality and health-consciousness means Dorothy Lynch contains no MSG, cholesterol, or trans fats, making it a wholesome choice for any meal. Furthermore, it is proudly gluten-free, ensuring that more people can enjoy its distinctive flavor without dietary concerns. This dedication to tradition, quality, and accessibility ensures that Dorothy Lynch remains a beloved household name and a proud emblem of Nebraska’s rich culinary heritage.

The Distinctive Flavor of Dorothy Lynch: Beyond Salad Dressing

Many people, upon seeing its vibrant reddish-orange hue, might mistakenly assume Dorothy Lynch tastes like traditional French dressing. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. While most French dressings are oil-based, Dorothy Lynch sets itself apart with a rich, sweet, and tangy tomato base. Its thick, creamy texture and harmonious blend of sweet and spicy notes create a truly unique flavor profile that is universally appealing. It simply tastes homemade, evoking a comforting sense of nostalgia and the warmth of family kitchens.

But its versatility extends far beyond just salads. Dorothy Lynch is an incredibly adaptable ingredient that can elevate a myriad of dishes. My husband, for instance, absolutely loves it as a dipping sauce for fried chicken! Its balanced flavor makes it an exceptional marinade for meats, adding depth and tenderness. You can even drizzle it on pizza for an unexpected burst of flavor or use it as a flavorful glaze for BBQ. From enhancing the simplest steamed vegetables to transforming grilled meats, Dorothy Lynch is truly fantastic on everything. Its inherent sweet and spicy tomato notes make it a natural, flavorful upgrade for classic recipes, especially as the star ingredient in a traditional “Sloppy Joe” mixture – thus giving birth to our irresistible Sloppy Dorothy Sandwiches.

Sloppy Dorothy Sandwiches are more than just a meal; they’re the quintessential tailgating food. Their hearty nature and ability to feed a crowd make them perfect for game-day gatherings. You can easily keep them warm and ready to serve in a slow cooker, or even place the pot on your grill to maintain their temperature outdoors. For the ultimate Sloppy Dorothy experience, serve them on soft hamburger buns with generous slices of American cheese and crisp dill pickles. And don’t forget the potato chips! They make excellent “scoops” for any delicious filling that might escape onto your plate. Oh, and one more essential item: plenty of napkins. These delightful sandwiches are gloriously messy, and that’s precisely part of their charm!

Key Ingredients for Your Perfect Sloppy Dorothy Sandwich

Crafting the perfect Sloppy Dorothy Sandwich is a delightful experience, bringing together simple, wholesome ingredients to create a symphony of flavors. Here’s a closer look at what makes this sandwich so special:

  • Lean Ground Beef: We start with lean ground beef, ensuring a hearty yet not overly greasy base for our delicious filling. This forms the foundation of the classic sloppy sandwich texture.
  • Minced Garlic Cloves: Whether you prefer the vibrant punch of fresh garlic or the convenience of jarred, these cloves add an essential aromatic depth that elevates the entire dish.
  • Onion: A sweet yellow onion is our preferred choice, sautéed until tender to contribute a subtle sweetness and aromatic foundation to the savory beef mixture.
  • Aromatic Spices: A thoughtful blend of mustard powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper creates a complex, well-rounded flavor profile that complements the dressing beautifully.
  • Tomato Paste and Water: One can of each provides the rich, concentrated tomato flavor and the necessary liquid to create that signature saucy consistency, making the mixture truly “sloppy” in the best way.
  • Honey: This natural sweetener balances the tang of the tomato and the savory notes of the beef, adding a touch of golden sweetness that makes the flavor irresistible. Local raw honey offers an extra layer of nuanced flavor, but any honey will do the trick.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: A splash of Worcestershire sauce is crucial for adding a profound umami depth and a subtle tang that rounds out the overall flavor, making it incredibly savory and moreish.
  • Dorothy Lynch Home Style Dressing: The undeniable star of the show! This unique, sweet and spicy tomato-based dressing is what transforms a simple ground beef mixture into the unforgettable, finger-licking Sloppy Dorothy. It truly brings all the flavors together in perfect harmony.

These fresh, high-quality ingredients combine to create a Sloppy Dorothy Sandwich that’s bursting with homemade goodness. Serve them generously piled high on soft hamburger-style buns, with creamy American cheese and crisp dill pickles for an added layer of flavor and texture.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon dried onion (or ¼ cup fresh, finely chopped)
  • Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste + 1 can water (use the empty tomato paste can to measure water)
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
  • ½ cup Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing
  • 1 ½ Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • For Serving: 6-8 hamburger buns
  • dill pickle slices and American cheese slices (optional, but highly recommended!)

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, minced garlic, dried onion (or fresh), salt, and black pepper in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot. Cook over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat with a spoon or meat chopper, until the ground beef is thoroughly browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
  2. To the browned beef, add the onion powder, garlic powder, mustard powder, tomato paste, water, honey, Dorothy Lynch Dressing, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir all ingredients together thoroughly until well combined, ensuring the spices are evenly distributed and the sauce is smooth.
  3. Reduce the heat to low. Let the mixture simmer gently for at least 30 minutes. This simmering time allows the flavors to meld beautifully and thicken the sauce to that perfect “sloppy” consistency. Stir frequently to prevent sticking.
  4. Serve your piping hot Sloppy Dorothy filling generously on soft hamburger buns. Garnish with slices of American cheese and dill pickles if desired – they add an extra layer of texture and tang. Don’t forget a side of crispy potato chips for scooping up any delicious overflow!

Notes

To adapt this recipe for a slow cooker: Brown the ground beef with onion, garlic, salt, and pepper as instructed. Once cooked and drained, transfer the meat and all remaining ingredients (except the buns, cheese, and pickles) to your slow cooker. Stir everything together. Cook on low for 5-6 hours, or until the flavors are well developed and the mixture is heated through. Serve warm on buns with cheese and pickles – and those essential potato chips!
