The Culinary Inspiration Behind These Unique Treats
My journey to creating these perfect Kahlua Crinkles began, as many great culinary discoveries do, while exploring other passionate food blogs. This particular gem was unearthed during my monthly assignment for the Secret Recipe Club, a wonderful group that challenges home cooks to dive into a fellow blogger’s archives. My assignment led me to the captivating world of Culinary Adventures with Camilla. As the fearless leader of our recipe club, Camilla’s blog is aptly named. Her culinary explorations are truly adventurous, taking readers on a flavorful journey around the globe, often utilizing ingredients that are both intriguing and unfamiliar.
Camilla embodies the spirit of “cooking outside the box,” inspiring her audience to experiment with new foods and herbs, pushing the boundaries of conventional cooking. While my personal cooking style might not always reach the same adventurous heights as Camilla’s – who, for instance, once featured Pickled Moose Melons! – I deeply resonate with her philosophy of encouraging open-mindedness towards food. Teaching our children to try new things, even if they “look weird,” is a value we share. Camilla, a proud mother of three (including her wonderful husband), has certainly led a life filled with exciting adventures, both in and out of the kitchen.
From her vast collection of recipes, I chose her enticing Coffee Liqueur Crinkles for Santa as my project. It was the perfect starting point for what would become my Kahlua Crinkles. Camilla’s blog is a treasure trove of unique ideas; I’m already planning to try her Blueberry Lemonade soon, and I highly recommend reading her fascinating post about the Artisan Pasta Class where she crafted exquisite Tequila Sunrise Tortellini and Ravioli. Her dedication to culinary exploration is truly inspiring.
The Magic of Kahlua: Elevating Your Baking

These cookies, affectionately dubbed Kahlua Crinkles, exceeded all expectations! The moment they emerged from the oven, their rich aroma filled the kitchen, promising something special. My husband, ever the discerning taste-tester, couldn’t resist sneaking them right off the cooling rack. I was genuinely surprised I managed to salvage enough for a decent photograph! Their deep chocolate hue and characteristic crinkled tops, dusted with sparkling Kahlua sugar, are as appealing to the eye as they are to the palate. Each bite offers a harmonious blend of sweetness and a subtle, sophisticated coffee liqueur warmth that lingers delightfully.
The secret to their incredible flavor, beyond the chocolate and coffee, lies in the generous use of Kahlua. Kahlua, a coffee liqueur originating from Veracruz, Mexico, is a staple in many homes, cherished for its distinctive flavor profile. It’s made with rum, sugar, and 100% Arabica coffee, resulting in a sweet, somewhat viscous liquid with prominent coffee notes and a hint of vanilla and caramel. While it’s famously used in cocktails, Kahlua also shines in baking, imparting moisture and a deep, complex flavor that complements chocolate beautifully.

For years, especially around Christmastime, I make a substantial batch of Homemade Kahlua. My recipe yields about a gallon, perfect for sharing with friends and family, and ensuring we have a steady supply to enjoy throughout the year. There’s something incredibly satisfying about crafting your own liqueurs, and homemade Kahlua offers a depth of flavor that’s hard to beat. It allows for a customizable sweetness and potency, making it ideal for both sipping and incorporating into recipes like these crinkles.

After all, you never know when the craving for a classic White Russian Cocktail will strike, do you? Having homemade Kahlua on hand means you’re always ready for a festive drink or a spontaneous baking session. Its versatility is truly remarkable, moving seamlessly from a rich dessert component to the star of a refreshing cocktail, proving its essential status in any well-stocked pantry or bar.
The Power of Espresso Powder and Kahlua-Infused Sugar

Camilla’s original recipe wisely called for espresso powder, an ingredient I hadn’t previously purchased but often wished I had during my baking endeavors. This powerful ingredient isn’t just for adding a coffee flavor; it’s a secret weapon for intensifying chocolate. Just a small amount of espresso powder can deepen the flavor of chocolate, making it taste richer and more complex without overtly tasting like coffee. It provides an underlying depth that truly makes the chocolate sing. A quick order from Amazon, and my espresso powder arrived in less than 48 hours, ready to work its magic.

While traditional crinkle cookies are often rolled in powdered sugar, Camilla’s use of granulated sugar sparked an exciting idea: why not flavor the sugar with Kahlua itself? I had previously experimented with Flavored Sugars with Extracts, so infusing sugar with Kahlua seemed like a natural, brilliant progression. This simple step turned out to be a game-changer, enhancing the cookies with an even more pronounced and delicious Kahlua essence. The coarse texture of the Kahlua-infused granulated sugar also creates a more pronounced crinkle effect, giving the cookies a beautiful visual appeal. The combination of cookies and booze? Absolutely! It’s a match made in dessert heaven, offering a delightful twist on a classic that will leave everyone craving more.

Kahlua Crinkles
Equipment
- Whisks for Cooking, 3 Pack Stainless Steel Whisk
- Kitchenaid Stand Mixer
- KitchenAid Hand Mixer
- 13×18 Half Sheet Pan
- King Arthur, Espresso Powder, Certified Kosher, Reusable Plastic Jar, 3 Ounces
- Native Vanilla – Pure Coffee Extract – 4 Fl Oz
Ingredients
For the Cookie Dough:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (one stick), softened
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons instant espresso powder
- 1 teaspoon coffee extract
- 2 teaspoons Kahlua coffee liqueur
For the Kahlua Sugar:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons Kahlua coffee liqueur
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- To prepare the Kahlua sugar: In a small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 2 teaspoons of Kahlua coffee liqueur. Use a fork to mix thoroughly until the Kahlua is fully incorporated and the sugar is evenly moistened. Set this mixture aside.
- To make the cookies: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and instant espresso powder. Set this dry mixture aside. In a separate large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer (stand or hand-held), cream together the softened butter, 1 cup granulated sugar, coffee extract, and 2 teaspoons Kahlua for about 4 minutes until the mixture is light, fluffy, and well combined. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully incorporated. Gradually fold the dry flour mixture into the wet ingredients until just combined and no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix.
- Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions of the cookie dough. Roll each portion into a smooth ball. Then, roll each dough ball generously in the prepared Kahlua sugar, ensuring it’s fully coated. Place the coated dough balls onto the parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie to allow for spreading.
- Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes. The tops will appear cracked, and the cookies will look puffy. They might seem slightly underbaked in the center, but this contributes to their chewy texture. Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy these decadent Kahlua Crinkles!
