Old Fashioned Pop Overs with Homemade Cherry Butter: A Timeless Easter Tradition
These exquisite Old Fashioned Pop Overs, luxuriously slathered with homemade Cherry Butter, promise to be a truly welcomed and memorable addition to your Easter meal, creating cherished moments around your family table.

There’s a special kind of magic in vintage recipes, isn’t there? Those treasured culinary secrets, lovingly passed down from generation to generation, or perhaps found within the dog-eared pages of old cookbooks, their bindings worn thin and pages yellowed from countless hours spent in the kitchen, crafting meals for our dearest ones. These recipes are more than just instructions; they are stories, memories, and a tangible link to the past, reminding us of simpler times and the enduring power of homemade goodness.

The Enduring Appeal of Simple Ingredients and Homemade Love
While we certainly cook to nourish our bodies, I believe that the love and care poured into a homemade meal can be tasted with every bite. There’s immense satisfaction in knowing the origin of your food and working with pure, straightforward ingredients. This is precisely why those tried-and-true vintage recipes hold such an irresistible charm. They eschew unnecessary complexity and fussy additions, relying instead on fundamental components that were readily available and often sourced directly from farms or gardens. Such recipes celebrate the innate deliciousness of real food.
Take these Old Fashioned Pop Overs, for instance. They possess an impressive, almost elegant appearance, yet their preparation is wonderfully simple, requiring only a handful of pantry staples: eggs, milk, flour, butter, salt, and a hint of sugar. These humble ingredients, when combined with the right technique, transform into something truly spectacular.

Mastering the Art of Pop Over Perfection
Achieving those magnificent, sky-high popovers is easier than you might think. While a specialized popover pan yields the most dramatic results, don’t let its absence deter you. Standard custard cups or even a well-buttered muffin tin can be used effectively. The key to their signature hollow, airy interior and crisp exterior lies in a few simple tricks. Starting with a preheated, well-buttered pan helps create that initial burst of steam, propelling the batter upwards. Room temperature ingredients are also crucial for a smooth, well-emulsified batter that rises consistently.

Easter Traditions and Culinary Inspiration
Preparing for Easter dinner is a special ritual in my home. As the annual host, I always conduct a trial run for new recipes, and these popovers were no exception. Easter has always been a significant holiday for my family. Growing up, while most holidays were celebrated at my Grandma’s house, Easter was always my Mom’s special occasion to host. When my husband and I bought our first home, Mom lovingly declared, “Now you can have Easter!” And so, a new tradition began, with my home becoming the heart of our family’s Easter festivities ever since.

*This cherished photo captures my Grandma, myself, and my husband (then fiancé) in 1991 at my Mom’s house for Easter.*

*Here’s a glimpse of our festive Easter dinner table in 2014 – I always enjoy changing up the theme and color palette each year to keep things fresh and exciting.*
The Perfect Pairing: Pop Overs and Cherry Butter
Our Easter menu traditionally features a few constants: my Grandma’s famous Polish Sausage and Sauerkraut, and a succulent ham. While the main dishes remain a beloved fixture, I love to experiment with the side dishes and desserts, always aiming for flavors that beautifully complement our traditional spread. To me, few things pair as harmoniously with ham as cherries. The sweet-tart notes of cherries create a delightful contrast to the savory richness of ham, making for a truly memorable culinary experience. This delightful flavor combination inspired me to create a homemade cherry butter that would be the ideal accompaniment for both our Easter ham and these fluffy popovers.

*Quick tip: For a creative twist, consider filling these popovers with a savory chicken and vegetable mixture for a fun, individual alternative to traditional pot pie!*

Crafting Cherry Butter couldn’t be simpler, again requiring only a few basic ingredients. This easy-to-make spread offers a wonderfully sweet and slightly tangy alternative to plain butter, elevating warm popovers, dinner rolls, or any breakfast bread into a gourmet experience. Its vibrant flavor and smooth texture make it an irresistible addition to your table.

These popovers truly are magnificent! Just look at how wonderfully huge they turn out. Every single time I make them using Bob’s Red Mill Organic Unbleached White Flour, they emerge from the oven light, airy, and perfectly puffed – a testament to the flour’s consistent quality and the simplicity of this classic recipe.

Ingredients
- 3 eggs room temperature
- 1 cup milk room temperature
- 3 Tablespoons butter melted
- 1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Organic Unbleached White Flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- generous pinch of granulated sugar
- butter for pop over tin
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Generously butter your popover pan or custard cups.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs until thoroughly combined. Gradually whisk in the flour, salt, and granulated sugar until the batter is smooth and well-incorporated. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough popovers.
- Place the buttered popover pan into the preheated oven for 2 minutes to get it sizzling hot. Carefully remove the hot tin from the oven and quickly divide the batter evenly among the 6 cups.
- Bake for 40 minutes without opening the oven door (this is crucial for maximum rise!). After 40 minutes, quickly and carefully make a small slit into the side of each popover with a sharp knife to allow steam to escape. Return to the oven and bake for another 10 minutes to ensure they are crisp and golden.
- Remove the popovers from the pan immediately and serve them piping hot for the best experience.
- Crown these incredible popovers with a generous dollop of delicious homemade Cherry Butter for an unforgettable treat!
