Ingredients

  • 1 tube of refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing packet included

Instructions

  1. Every waffle iron will differ, so it’s best to try one cinnamon roll first to gauge the optimal cooking time. For instance, while typical waffles might take about 4 minutes in our waffle maker, these cinnamon roll waffles often only require about 2 minutes. Preheat your waffle iron and spray it generously with non-stick cooking spray. Place the cinnamon rolls directly onto the hot waffle iron. (I used regular-sized rolls and a Belgian Waffle Maker; I was able to make 4 at a time.) Close the lid and cook until golden brown and cooked through.
  2. While the waffles cook, prepare the frosting. Take the frosting packet that came with the cinnamon rolls and squeeze its contents into a microwave-safe cup. Warm it in the microwave for about 15-30 seconds, or until it’s thin enough to drizzle. The icing will naturally thin out somewhat; you can add a tiny bit of milk (about half a teaspoon) to thin it further if you desire a runnier consistency. Pour the warm icing generously over your warm cinnamon roll waffles. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Tips for Perfect Cinnamon Roll Waffles Every Time

  • Preheat Thoroughly: Ensure your waffle iron is fully preheated before adding the cinnamon rolls. This helps them cook evenly and develop that perfect golden crust.
  • Don’t Overcrowd: While it’s tempting to maximize space, avoid placing too many cinnamon rolls in the waffle iron at once. Give them room to expand and cook properly.
  • Monitor Cooking Time: As noted in the recipe, cooking times vary by waffle iron. Keep a close eye on your first batch. They typically cook much faster than traditional waffle batter. Look for a deep golden brown color and a slight crispness.
  • Generous Non-Stick Spray: Cinnamon rolls can be sticky, so a good layer of non-stick cooking spray is crucial to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal.
  • Warm the Icing: The magic of warm, drizzly icing cannot be overstated. Heating it briefly in the microwave makes it easy to pour and adds to the overall delightful experience. If it’s too thick, a tiny splash of milk or even water can help.
  • Serve Immediately: Cinnamon roll waffles are best enjoyed fresh off the iron when they are warm and the icing melts into their crevices.

Serving Suggestions to Elevate Your Waffles

While delicious on their own, cinnamon roll waffles can be dressed up to create an even more impressive brunch spread:

  • Fresh Berries: A sprinkle of fresh strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries adds a touch of freshness and a vibrant color contrast.
  • Whipped Cream: A dollop of homemade or store-bought whipped cream is always a welcome addition to any waffle dish.
  • Maple Syrup or Caramel Sauce: For an extra layer of sweetness, a drizzle of warm maple syrup or a rich caramel sauce can take these waffles to the next level.
  • Toasted Nuts: A sprinkle of chopped pecans or walnuts adds a delightful crunch and nutty flavor.
  • Ice Cream: For a truly decadent dessert-for-breakfast experience, serve a warm cinnamon roll waffle with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Creative Variations to Try

Once you’ve mastered the basic cinnamon roll waffle, feel free to experiment with these fun variations:

  • Fruit-Filled Waffles: Before cooking, gently press a few small pieces of apple, pear, or banana into the center of each cinnamon roll.
  • Chocolate Chip Waffles: Add a few chocolate chips to the center of each roll before closing the waffle iron for a chocolatey twist.
  • Savory Swirls (for the adventurous!): While less common, you could experiment with savory refrigerated doughs and spices for a unique take.
  • Pumpkin Spice: During fall, look for pumpkin spice flavored refrigerated rolls for a seasonal treat.
  • Different Icings: If you’re feeling ambitious, ditch the packet icing for a homemade cream cheese frosting, or even a simple lemon glaze for a contrasting tang.

The Verdict: An Unmissable Breakfast Innovation

The concept of cinnamon roll waffles is a testament to how simple culinary creativity can lead to extraordinary results. It’s a hack that delivers on its promise: a quick, easy, and incredibly delicious breakfast that combines the best of two beloved worlds.
