“The Shining”: A Cinematic Inspiration

Who hasn’t seen the iconic movie, “The Shining”? If you haven’t, I strongly urge you to add it to your watchlist. It’s a cinematic masterpiece that seamlessly blends suspense, horror, and psychological thriller elements.

I’ll be the first to admit that scary movies aren’t typically my cup of tea, especially those slasher flicks. However, movies like “The Shining,” which keep you glued to the screen, biting your nails, and instinctively grabbing the nearest person, are an entirely different experience.

These are the kinds of movies that are truly worth watching! “The Shining” is a prime example.

Imagine a family trapped in a snowstorm in a remote, isolated hotel high in the mountains. They are utterly alone, and as the days turn into weeks, their sanity slowly begins to unravel. The movie masterfully portrays the descent into madness, making it a truly unforgettable viewing experience.

Here's Johnny!

“Here’s Johnny!” – One of the most iconic lines in horror movie history.

Jack Nicholson delivers a mesmerizing performance as Jack Torrance, an author who seizes the opportunity to spend the winter at the Overlook Hotel with his wife, Wendy, and their son, Danny. He believes that the solitude and tranquility of the hotel will provide the perfect environment to work on his book. Little does he know that the hotel has a dark and sinister past, and it will soon begin to exert its influence on his fragile psyche.

What begins as a seemingly idyllic retreat quickly spirals into a nightmare.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” – A chilling mantra that reflects Jack’s descent into madness.

As Jack types away at his manuscript, his mental state deteriorates, and he slowly begins to lose his grip on reality. Meanwhile, his son, Danny, who possesses psychic abilities, starts experiencing terrifying visions and encounters with supernatural entities within the hotel. He starts repeating the word, “REDRUM,” a cryptic message that foreshadows the impending doom.

The Twins - A terrifying presence

The haunting presence of the twins adds another layer of dread to the Overlook Hotel.

Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance

Shelley Duvall delivers a powerful and heartbreaking performance as Wendy Torrance, the wife and mother who desperately tries to protect her family.

One night, Danny, in a trance-like state, enters his mother’s room while she’s sleeping. He grabs her red lipstick and eerily writes “REDRUM” on the door.

The REDRUM Message

She awakens to find him standing over her, clutching a butcher knife, and repeating “REDRUM, REDRUM” incessantly.

Suddenly, she glances at the door and then at the mirror across the room. In a moment of chilling realization, she understands that “REDRUM,” spelled backward, spells “MURDER.”

This is the iconic scene from the movie that inspired our cocktail!

The Inspiration Behind the RedRum Punch

One night, I was lying in bed, trying to drift off to sleep, and my mind started wandering to food, my blog, and all the usual things.

We had tickets for a Husker game that Saturday, and it was an early one, so I was brainstorming ideas for what to make for our tailgate party.

I decided to whip up those classic cocktail weenies wrapped in bacon and baked with brown sugar. They’re always a crowd-pleaser and seemed like a perfect fit for a morning tailgate!

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to snap a picture of them, but here’s a link to the instructions if you’re interested in making them:

Turns out, the weenies served a dual purpose – they kept our hands warm on that chilly morning!

I was determined to come up with something creative that would be perfect for both the Huskers game and the Halloween weekend.

My thoughts drifted to drinks that were red in color. And then, out of nowhere, “REDRUM” popped into my head, and the idea for this spooky cocktail was born.

The very next day, I started experimenting and tweaking the recipe, with the goal of getting it into the freezer as soon as possible.

I’ve had success with my Vodka Slushes recipe many times. Because I know it’s a tried-and-true formula, I used the alcohol-to-liquid ratio in that recipe to guide my measurements for this RedRum Punch.

Enjoy the chilling taste of frozen RedRum punch!

It was a brisk 27 degrees the morning we were tailgating. Sipping on a frozen drink might seem a bit unconventional, but the sun was shining, my Huskers secured a victory, and all was well in the world!

We brought my brother and his fiancé to the game, and we had a truly fantastic time!

Tailgating in the cold

Enduring 27 degrees of fun! My husband and I, my brother and his fiancé.

Here’s a Halloween toast!

“Here’s to the Witches,

Here’s to their cats,

Here’s to the hoot owls

And Whirring bats;

Here’s to the ghosties,

In robes of white,

Here’s to the thrills of

Hallowe’en night.”

Cheers!!
