Zesty Double Chocolate Cupcakes with Orange Buttercream

Indulge in the perfect blend: double chocolate orange cupcake with orange buttercream.

Every now and then, a recipe captures your imagination, calling out to you with an undeniable allure. For me, that moment arrived with these phenomenal Double Chocolate Orange Cupcakes. This isn’t just another dessert; it’s a symphony of rich chocolate and bright, tangy orange, culminating in a treat that truly screams pure delight!

My love affair with the chocolate-orange combination dates back to a bygone era when Starbucks delighted customers with their unique Orange Mocha. It was a fleeting masterpiece, a harmonious blend of deep coffee, sweet chocolate, and a citrusy zest that I adored. While it may not have been a universal hit – and my waistline probably secretly thanks its eventual departure from the menu – I still reminisce about that exquisite flavor profile. The moment I stumbled upon this cupcake recipe, a wave of nostalgia washed over me, and I knew instantly that I had to recreate that beloved flavor pairing in a brand new, baked form. Not only did it promise to satisfy my craving for that specific taste, but it also presented the perfect opportunity to experiment with the charming trend of serving cupcakes in jars, adding an extra layer of presentation and portability.

The Baking Journey: From Thick Batter to Fluffy Perfection

Embarking on this baking adventure, I was immediately struck by the consistency of the cupcake batter. It was incredibly thick, almost like spooning decadent chocolate pudding into the cupcake liners. This dense texture, however, was a prelude to the amazing result. As these delightful creations baked, they rose magnificently, transforming into enormous, beautifully domed cupcakes. The aroma filling my kitchen was simply divine – a rich, enticing blend of warm chocolate and vibrant orange zest that promised something truly special.

Warm from the oven, these delectable chocolate creations are a true delight.

The first batch, fresh out of the oven, became my initial taste test. I was absolutely amazed by the texture of the cake itself – incredibly light and airy, yet profoundly rich and chocolaty. It was a perfect balance, a testament to the well-crafted recipe. But just as I thought I had reached the pinnacle of dessert perfection, I started preparing the Orange Butter Cream frosting. And let me tell you, as the kids say, “OMG.”

The Orange Butter Cream was a revelation. Its smooth, creamy texture and vibrant citrus flavor complemented the deep chocolate cake in a way that was nothing short of miraculous. The bright, zesty notes of fresh orange cut through the richness of the chocolate, creating a symphony of flavors that danced on the palate. Each spoonful of frosting was a burst of sunshine, elevating the humble cupcake to an extraordinary indulgence. This frosting wasn’t just an accessory; it was a star in its own right, completing the chocolate orange experience with finesse.

The flash captured streams of light behind it… I can almost hear the angels sing!

Sharing the Sweetness: Cupcakes for Friends and Festivities

This baking project coincided with the first week of school, a time often bustling with activities and a renewed sense of community. My initial plan was to make these exquisite cupcakes for the annual school carnival’s cake walk. However, as I frosted them and tasted the incredible combination, I quickly realized that these treats were too special not to share with my closest friends – my cherished “click” of moms who regularly gather for lunch throughout the school year. I love to surprise them with a little something special waiting at their place setting when they arrive.

Just the week before, at the close of the last school year, I had prepared “Mom’s Taxi Fuel” – a little pick-me-up to celebrate surviving the hectic end of term. It felt only fitting, then, to kick off the new school year with an equally thoughtful and delicious gesture. And what could be more perfect than these divine Double Chocolate Orange Cupcakes, elegantly presented in charming crystal jelly jars?

The “cupcakes in a jar” concept is not only visually appealing but also incredibly convenient for gifting. It creates a delightful, self-contained dessert experience that feels both rustic and refined. Each jar becomes a miniature edible gift, perfect for a personalized touch. This innovative presentation elevates a simple cupcake into a thoughtful present, making it ideal for gatherings, parties, or just a sweet surprise for loved ones. The anticipation of opening the jar, seeing the layers, and then digging in is part of the magic.

Assembling Your Cupcakes in a Jar: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating these delightful cupcake jars is a fun and easy process, transforming a simple cupcake into an elegant, portable dessert. First, allow your freshly baked cupcakes to cool completely. Once cooled, carefully slice off the top of each cupcake. Gently place the bottom portion of the cupcake into the bottom of a clean crystal jelly jar. Next, generously pipe a layer of that heavenly Orange Butter Cream frosting over the cupcake base. For an extra touch of chocolatey goodness, sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top of the frosting layer.

Now, take the top portion of the cupcake that you sliced off earlier and carefully place it on top of the chocolate chips and frosting. Repeat the piping process with another luscious layer of Orange Butter Cream, followed by more chocolate chips. This layering technique creates an appealing visual presentation and ensures a balanced bite of cake and frosting with every spoonful. To complete the artisanal look, tie a small fork onto the jar with a pretty ribbon and attach a cute, handmade tag. Voilà! You’ve created not just a dessert, but a heartfelt gift perfectly suited for your sweet friends or any special occasion. These charming jars are ideal for parties, hostess gifts, or simply as a special treat to brighten someone’s day. The combination of rich, moist cake and creamy, zesty frosting makes these Double Chocolate Orange Cupcakes an unforgettable experience, whether enjoyed traditionally or as a delightful treat in a jar.

By following these steps, you’ll not only achieve a visually stunning dessert but also a perfectly balanced flavor profile that highlights both the rich chocolate and the refreshing orange. This recipe is a testament to how simple ingredients, when combined thoughtfully, can create something truly extraordinary. Get ready to impress your guests and delight your palate with these incredible treats!

Ingredients

  • The Cake:
  • 1 12-oz. package NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE Semisweet Chocolate Morsels, divided
  • 1 18.25-oz. package German chocolate cake mix
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 cups orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • The Frosting:
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange rind
  • 1 16-oz. package confectioners sugar
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. orange juice

Instructions

The Cake:

  1. Microwave 1 cup chocolate morsels in a 2-cup glass measuring cup at HIGH for 1 minute, stirring after 30 seconds. Continue stirring until smooth. Cool slightly.
  2. In a large bowl, beat cake mix, eggs, melted butter, and 1 1/4 cups orange juice at low speed with an electric mixer until moistened. Increase speed to medium, and beat for 1 to 2 minutes or until well blended and smooth. Add the slightly cooled melted chocolate and vanilla extract, beating until thoroughly blended. Spoon the batter by 1/4-cupfuls into paper baking cups placed in muffin pans.
  3. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 16 to 18 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool in the pans on wire racks for 5 minutes. Then, remove them from the pans and cool completely on wire racks. Once fully cooled, spread the Orange Butter Cream Frosting evenly over each cupcake.
  4. To decorate, place the remaining chocolate morsels in a 1-quart zip-top plastic freezer bag; seal the bag. Microwave at MEDIUM (50% power) for 45 seconds to 1 minute, turning the bag over after 30 seconds, until chocolate is melted and smooth when squeezed. Cut a tiny hole in one corner of the bag. Gently squeeze the bag to pipe melted chocolate over the Orange Butter Cream Frosting on the cupcakes, creating a beautiful drizzle.

The Frosting:

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and grated orange rind at medium speed with an electric mixer until light and creamy.
  2. Gradually add the 16-oz. package of confectioners’ sugar, beating until well blended and smooth.
  3. Stir in 2 tablespoons of orange juice, adding an additional tablespoon of orange juice if necessary to reach your desired light and fluffy consistency.
