Homemade Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard

Indulge in the nostalgic flavors of fall with this Homemade Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard – a perfect blend of spiced apples, creamy vanilla ice cream, and crunchy cinnamon pie crust.

Delicious Homemade Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard in a glass

What’s more comforting than classic American apple pie? Perhaps creamy vanilla ice cream. Now, imagine combining these two beloved desserts into one irresistible treat! That’s the magic of an Apple Pie Blizzard, a seasonal sensation that captures the essence of autumn in every spoonful.

For many, the sight of fall colors brings to mind cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, and the beloved seasonal Blizzards at Dairy Queen. I confess, when a Dairy Queen opened just a mile from my home a few years back, my willpower was truly tested. Those iconic Blizzards have an almost magnetic pull! While I usually resist the temptation, autumn is a different story. Their fall lineup, featuring Apple Pie and Pumpkin Pie Blizzards, is simply too good to pass up. My daughter and I often compromise, ordering one of each to share, because making such delicious decisions is incredibly hard! While the pumpkin pie version is also a favorite, today we celebrate the crisp, sweet, and perfectly spiced goodness of the Apple Pie Blizzard, a fantastic way to conclude our Apple Week celebration.

This brilliant idea for a homemade Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard came to me just a couple of weeks ago. I was eager to create something truly epic and delicious with my brand-new Swiss Diamond Jêt Mix Immersion Blender, and I honestly believe this recipe hits it out of the park!

Perfectly whipped cream for the Copycat Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard

Can you really enjoy a proper “pie” dessert without a generous dollop of whipped cream? You technically could… but why would you ever want to?

Key Ingredients for Your Homemade Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard:

Creating this irresistible homemade blizzard requires a few simple yet essential components:

  • Rich vanilla ice cream and fresh heavy whipping cream for that signature creamy texture.
  • A crisp Granny Smith apple, known for its perfect balance of tartness and firm texture, ideal for “baking.”
  • A convenient refrigerated pie crust, which we’ll transform into crunchy, cinnamon-spiced bits.
  • A warming blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of apple pie spice to elevate the apple flavor.
  • Sweeteners like granulated sugar and brown sugar, complemented by a hint of vanilla extract.

Fresh Granny Smith apple ready for peeling and coring

To begin your Apple Pie Blizzard journey, select a firm, tart apple. I always opt for a Granny Smith apple, as its bright, acidic notes and firm flesh hold up beautifully, just as they do in my favorite baked apple pies. Start by coring and carefully peeling the apple.

Peeled and cored apple in a bowl with brown sugar

Once prepared, place the apple into a microwave-safe bowl. Fill the hollowed core with rich brown sugar, allowing its molasses notes to seep into the fruit as it cooks.

Apple sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg, ready for microwaving

Then, generously sprinkle the apple’s exterior with fragrant cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg. These spices are key to capturing that authentic apple pie aroma and taste. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and microwave it to gently “bake” the apple until tender and fragrant. This quick method perfectly softens the apple while infusing it with those delightful flavors.

Refrigerated pie crust sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar

While your apple is cooking, prepare the crunchy pie crust component. Unroll a refrigerated pie crust onto a pizza pan or baking sheet. Lightly sprinkle it with granulated sugar and more cinnamon, then bake it until it’s golden brown and delightfully crisp. This will provide the perfect textural contrast to the creamy blizzard.

Pureed baked apple cooling in a bowl

Once the baked apple has cooled slightly, I utilized the mincer attachment on my Swiss Diamond Jêt Mix Immersion Blender to effortlessly puree it into a smooth, spiced apple sauce. The immersion blender makes this step incredibly easy and mess-free. Transfer the apple puree to the refrigerator to chill thoroughly, as a cold apple mixture is essential for a thick, luscious blizzard.

Freshly whipped cream ready for the blizzard

Next, I switched to the beater attachment to whip my cold heavy cream with vanilla and powdered sugar until stiff, airy peaks formed. This process truly took mere seconds with the Jêt Mix Immersion Blender – it’s truly impressive how quickly it works! Store this freshly whipped cream in the refrigerator to keep it perfectly chilled until you’re ready to assemble your blizzard.

Vanilla ice cream being blended in a stainless steel bowl

Now, for the blizzard base! Take your very cold, hard-frozen vanilla ice cream directly from the freezer and place it into a sturdy stainless steel bowl. Using the beater attachment of your immersion blender once more, blend the ice cream until it becomes thick and smooth, just like the consistency of a classic blizzard. Resist the urge to add any milk; the ice cream alone should achieve the perfect texture.

Chilled apple puree added to blended vanilla ice cream

Observe how wonderfully thick and rich your ice cream base is! This is the ideal foundation for your blizzard. Quickly incorporate the thoroughly chilled, pureed baked apple into the blended ice cream, mixing it in until just combined. The contrast of the cold apple against the creamy ice cream is simply divine.

Folding broken pie crust pieces into the apple blizzard mix

Finally, take your baked cinnamon-sugar pie crust and break it into delightful, bite-sized pieces. Gently fold these crunchy crust fragments into the apple blizzard mixture. The textural interplay between the smooth ice cream, soft apple, and crisp pie crust is what makes this copycat Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard truly exceptional. Serve immediately, adorned with a generous swirl of your homemade whipped cream and a final sprinkle of cinnamon or a dash of apple pie spice for an extra layer of warmth and flavor. This homemade version is so satisfying, offering all the joy of your favorite DQ treat right from your kitchen!

Prep Time: 15 mins

Cook Time: 10 mins

Total Time: 25 mins

Cuisine: American

Keyword: Copycat Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard, Apple Pie Ice Cream

Servings: 1 pint

Ingredients

For the Apple:

  • 1 medium Granny Smith Apple, cored and peeled
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • Sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg

For the Crust:

  • 1 refrigerated pie crust
  • Sprinkling of cinnamon and granulated sugar

For the Whipped Cream:

  • 1/2 cup cold heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar

For the Blizzard:

  • 3 heaping cups vanilla ice cream (cold and hard-frozen)

Instructions

  1. For the Apple: Peel and core one medium Granny Smith apple. Place it in a microwave-safe bowl. Fill the cored center with brown sugar and sprinkle the outside of the apple with cinnamon and nutmeg. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and microwave for 5 minutes until the apple is tender. Exercise caution when removing the hot bowl and plastic wrap. Allow the apple to cool slightly, then puree it until smooth. Transfer the pureed apple to the refrigerator to chill completely.
  2. For the Crust: Unroll the refrigerated pie crust onto a pizza pan or baking sheet. Sprinkle generously with granulated sugar and cinnamon. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 9 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Let cool completely, then break into small pieces. You will use about 1/4 of the crust for the blizzard; the remaining pieces can be enjoyed as a snack or used for garnish.
  3. For the Whipped Cream: In a cold bowl, combine the cold heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Whip with an immersion blender (or electric mixer) until stiff peaks form. Place the whipped cream in the refrigerator to keep it chilled until you’re ready to serve.
  4. For the Blizzard: Start with very cold, hard-frozen vanilla ice cream. Scoop it into a stainless steel bowl. Using an immersion blender with the beater attachment, blend the ice cream until it becomes thick and smooth. Be careful not to over-blend, as this can make it too runny. Quickly add the chilled, pureed apples to the ice cream and gently fold them in. Finally, fold in the broken pieces of cinnamon-sugar pie crust. Serve your Copycat Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard immediately, garnished with a dollop of whipped cream and an extra sprinkle of apple pie spice. Enjoy!
