Key Ingredients for a Perfectly Spicy Brussels Sprouts Gratin

Crafting this savory and slightly spicy Brussels Sprouts Gratin requires just a few simple ingredients, showcasing how quality components can lead to extraordinary results:

  • Paisley Farm Hot Brussels Sprouts: The star of our dish, providing convenience, tang, and a hint of spice.
  • Butter: Forms the base of our creamy cheese sauce, adding richness.
  • Milk: Essential for achieving the smooth, velvety consistency of the gratin.
  • White Cheddar Cheese: Delivers a sharp, robust flavor that perfectly complements the sprouts.
  • Flour: Used to thicken the sauce, creating a perfect béchamel foundation.
  • Bread Crumbs: Creates a wonderfully crispy, golden-brown topping.
  • Paprika: Adds a touch of warmth, color, and a subtle smokiness to the gratin.

Draining and quartering Paisley Farm Hot Brussels Sprouts for gratin

Begin your preparation by carefully draining the Paisley Farm Hot Brussels Sprouts. Once drained, quarter them to ensure even cooking and distribution throughout the gratin. Arrange these quartered sprouts evenly in a shallow baking dish that has been lightly coated with non-stick cooking spray. This initial step sets the foundation for a perfectly baked and beautifully presented side dish.

Preparing the cheese sauce for Brussels Sprouts Gratin

Next, prepare the decadent au gratin sauce. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it’s glistening. Whisk in the flour to create a smooth roux, cooking it for about a minute to remove any raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps, until the sauce begins to thicken. Finally, add the freshly grated sharp white cheddar cheese, stirring until it’s completely melted and integrated into a creamy, luxurious sauce. For a sophisticated twist, Gruyere cheese is also a delicious alternative. Once the sauce is perfect, generously pour it over the prepared Brussels sprouts in the baking dish, spreading it evenly to coat every piece.

Sprinkling breadcrumbs and paprika over Brussels Sprouts Gratin

To achieve that irresistible golden crust, sprinkle a generous layer of bread crumbs evenly over the top of the cheese sauce. Finish with a delicate dusting of paprika, which not only adds a lovely color but also a subtle, complementary flavor. This simple topping will transform into a crisp, savory layer during baking, providing a delightful textural contrast to the creamy gratin below.

The quick cooking time is one of the many benefits of using Paisley Farm’s pre-prepared Brussels sprouts, making this an ideal dish for when time is of the essence but flavor is paramount.

The taste is simply incredible – forget bland vegetables! The delightful tang from the vinegar used in Paisley Farm’s unique jarring process shines through, creating a perfect harmony with the rich, creamy cheese. My decision to add paprika proved to be excellent, introducing an extra layer of warmth and a subtle spice that beautifully enhanced the already mildly zesty sprouts. Each bite offers a symphony of textures and flavors, from the tender sprouts to the gooey cheese and the crispy topping, making this gratin an undeniable crowd-pleaser.
