If my family happens upon this article, they might raise an eyebrow at my enthusiastic declaration that these baked sweet potato chips are utterly delicious! You see, for the longest time, sweet potatoes and I had a rather complicated relationship. My mind would conjure images of overly sweet Thanksgiving casseroles, laden with bubbly marshmallows and brown sugar, making me shy away from this vibrant root vegetable. It was a perception deeply ingrained, associating sweet potatoes primarily with desserts rather than versatile savory delights.

This long-standing disconnect, however, took an unexpected turn with a serendipitous delivery. A box brimming with fresh, diverse produce arrived at my doorstep, and with it, a new culinary chapter began. This wasn’t just any box; it was a curated selection that challenged my preconceived notions about various ingredients, including the much-maligned (by me, at least) sweet potato.

A vibrant box of fresh produce from Melissa's, featuring pears, butternut squash, apples, lemons, baby potatoes, sunflower chokes, and yams.

Melissa’s Produce truly outdid themselves, sending a magnificent assortment of fresh, high-quality ingredients. The box was a treasure trove, featuring crisp pears, earthy butternut squash, juicy apples, zesty lemons, petite baby potatoes, unique sunflower chokes, and, of course, a selection of beautiful yams (which are often referred to as sweet potatoes in the US). My culinary imagination immediately sparked to life; I was determined to utilize every single item. Yet, when my gaze fell upon the yams, a familiar question arose: “What on earth am I going to do with these?”

Then, inspiration struck like a bolt of lightning. I already had beloved recipes for Baked Potato Chips and mouthwatering Baked Zucchini Chips. If I could transform ordinary potatoes and zucchini into crispy, satisfying snacks in the oven, why not sweet potatoes? The idea was born, and the path to my sweet potato chip enlightenment was clear. This was my chance to redefine my relationship with this nutrient-rich root, moving beyond the sugary stereotypes and discovering its true savory potential.

Mastering the Art of Baked Sweet Potato Chips: A Simple Guide

Creating perfectly crispy and flavorful sweet potato chips in your oven is surprisingly straightforward, requiring just a few key steps and a little patience. The beauty of baking them lies in achieving that satisfying crunch without the excess oil and calories associated with deep-frying. This method not only makes them a healthier snack but also allows the natural sweetness of the potatoes to shine through, complemented by your chosen seasonings.

The foundation of a great baked chip is consistent thin slicing. While a sharp knife can certainly do the job, a mandoline slicer is an invaluable tool for achieving uniform thickness, which is crucial for even cooking and optimal crispiness. Once sliced, these vibrant orange discs are lightly coated with olive oil and seasoned to perfection before being spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. The oven then works its magic, transforming them into golden, crunchy morsels that are hard to resist. The process might require a bit of flipping and monitoring, but the delicious results are well worth the effort.

Thinly sliced sweet potatoes ready for seasoning, fanned out on a cutting board.

Begin by thoroughly scrubbing your sweet potatoes. Whether to peel them is entirely up to your preference; I often opt for a “half-peeled” approach, leaving some skin on for added texture and nutrients. The skin adds a rustic charm and a bit more fiber. Once cleaned, the most critical step is slicing. Aim for slices that are as thin and consistent as possible – ideally around 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. A mandoline slicer is a game-changer here, ensuring uniform slices that will cook evenly and crisp up beautifully. If using a knife, take your time to cut them as uniformly as you can.

Sweet potato slices in a bowl, sprinkled generously with paprika, seasoned salt, and oregano, ready to be tossed.

Next, elevate the natural sweetness of the potatoes with a balanced blend of spices. For this recipe, a generous sprinkle of paprika lends a warm, earthy hue and a subtle peppery flavor, while seasoned salt enhances overall taste. A touch of dried oregano adds a fragrant, herbaceous note, creating a truly harmonious flavor profile. Feel free to experiment with other spices to suit your palate, such as garlic powder, onion powder, a pinch of cayenne for heat, or even a dash of cinnamon for a sweeter profile. The possibilities are endless when it comes to custom seasoning these homemade chips.

Sweet potato slices being tossed in a bowl with olive oil and spices, ensuring an even coating.

Once seasoned, combine the sliced yams with a healthy drizzle of olive oil. Gently toss them to ensure every single slice is evenly coated with both the oil and the spices. This thin layer of oil is essential for helping the chips crisp up and for the seasonings to adhere, creating a uniform flavor and texture. Avoid over-oiling, as too much can result in soggy chips rather than crispy ones. A light, even coating is key.

Thinly sliced and seasoned sweet potato chips spread in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Now, spread the seasoned sweet potato slices onto your prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Overcrowding the pan is the enemy of crispiness; if the slices overlap, they will steam instead of bake, resulting in limp chips. Use multiple baking sheets if necessary to ensure ample space between each slice. Bake for approximately 10 minutes, then carefully flip each chip and bake for another 10 minutes. Continue this process, checking frequently and flipping, until the chips reach your desired level of crispness. Keep a very close eye on them during the final stages, as sweet potato chips can go from perfectly golden to burnt in a matter of seconds due to their natural sugar content. Once golden brown and crisp, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely on the baking sheet. They will continue to crisp up as they cool, achieving that perfect, satisfying crunch.

Equipment

  • Premium Quality V-Pro Multi Blade Adjustable Mandoline Cheese/Vegetable Slicer, Cutter, Shredder
  • Zyliss Comfort Utility Knife
  • 13×18 Half Sheet Pan
Prevent your screen from going dark

Ingredients

  • 4 cups sliced yams/sweet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 4 Tablespoons Olive oil

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  • Thoroughly scrub your sweet potatoes or yams. You can peel them entirely, leave the skin on for a rustic touch and added nutrients, or half-peel them as I often do.
  • Using a thin, sharp knife or a mandoline slicer, slice the sweet potatoes as thinly and uniformly as possible (ideally 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick). Consistency is key for even cooking.
  • In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced sweet potatoes with olive oil, paprika, seasoned salt, and oregano. Toss gently until every slice is evenly coated with the oil and spices.
  • Arrange the seasoned sweet potato slices in a single layer on your prepared baking sheet. Ensure there is no overlapping to allow for proper crisping. Use multiple sheets if necessary. Bake for 10 minutes, then carefully flip each chip. Continue baking for another 10 minutes. Repeat this process of baking and flipping (usually 2-3 times total) until the chips are golden brown and achieve your desired level of crispness. Watch them very closely during the final minutes to prevent burning, as sweet potatoes can brown quickly due to their sugar content.
  • Remove from the oven and let the chips cool completely on the baking sheet. They will crisp up further as they cool. Serve immediately and enjoy!
